with its origins debated, the scarf can be found as far back as 3,000 years ago.
but the earliest record that’s agreed on is 1350 BC in ancient egypt.
worn by queen nerfetiti, who wore the scarf on her head -
but not to be mistaken with a headscarf, which has a longer, more complicated history.
it has been said the scarf was an adornment between her scalp and a jeweled headpiece...

and some say it was to show social status.

the chinese military were among one of the first to wear scarves as well.
sculptures of chinese soldiers show rectangular scarves on their shoulders from 1000 BC.

ancient romans were also early adopters but more exact timing is unknown.
they used the scarf as a sweat cloth, so scarves were used to keep clean - and thus to stay cool - rather than for warmth.

present day finds us, man to woman - country to country - wearing for fashion and function.

and more specifically i find myself hunting for what i would consider to be the grail of scarves..

the surrealist dream of 1952's hubert de givenchy working as artistic director for elsa schiaparelli

could not think of a more "me" piece ever - braided, feminine and slightly hidden.

like all my feelings 💕

wanted to eat my fruit with you,
your hands deep in sour and caramel
we hop on opposite flights like in that movie u loved
(it's just a dream i have often)
want to hear the velvet in your voice
your breath peeling off the fullest lips
perverted, thoughtful and poking fun at me
(it's just a dream i have often)
stacks of film
stacks of decks
i want my blood back
(it's just a dream i have often)
there was a call
desperate and pleading
"i can't live without you"
(it's just a dream i have often)
